Joana Ntunga Mukunzi

Therapist

I’m Joana, a clinician at CAFCO, where I support children, adolescents, and families under the supervision of a registered psychologist. I provide evidence-based assessment and therapy services in both French and English.

I provide psychoeducational and diagnostic assessments to better understand concerns related to learning, cognitive and language development, attention and hyperactivity, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. I aim to provide assessments that help families better understand their child’s development, strengths, and areas where support may be helpful.

In addition to assessment, I offer therapy services for a range of concerns, including mood and anxiety difficulties, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and challenges related to emotional and behavioural regulation. I take a warm, collaborative, and integrative approach, adapting therapy to fit each child and family’s unique needs. My work draws primarily from Cognitive Behavioural approaches, including third-wave models such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as emotion- and attachment-based approaches. I believe that meaningful change often happens when the people who matter most in a child’s life are part of the process. Therefore, whenever possible, I involve caregivers in treatment and aim to provide a space where families feel comfortable, supported, and engaged in the work we do together.

I have gained clinical experience across a variety of settings, including hospitals, school boards, and community-based mental health centres, which has shaped a flexible and comprehensive approach to working with children and families.
